What is my purpose? This is a question I have struggled with for a long time. Two definitions of purpose are: to propose as an aim to oneself, or a subject under discussion or an action in the course of execution. A wise man once told me, the following is how you know you're not living in your GIFT; when the alarm clock goes off in the morning and you are not happy about it, then you aren’t doing what you want to do. If going to your job makes you sick and you are unhappy to get to where you have to go, it's because you aren’t living in your gift. This is key because what burns in your heart is very important to listen to. It never goes away.
Everyone has a gift but many want someone else's gift. God has a special gift for each of us and we have to store this in our hearts. How can we try and listen to what that gift is when we are too busy trying to be rich and famous like the people we see on social media. I always wanted to be famous and I wanted everyone to know my name. While I've been in FCA, the only person I want to know my name is the Father in heaven. God has given everybody gifts and talents that they alone can develop in themselves. Once you find the place your gifts and talents meet the need, then that becomes your ministry. Romans 8:28 says that God uses all things for our good, not that all things are good. No matter how optimistic you are, some things just suck. Things like war, death, human trafficking, etc. are horrible. Our God is more powerful than all the forces of evil and all the rotten things that happen in our lives. You can’t sit around and wait for God to show you your purpose. It takes hard work and dedication to discover what your purpose is. Even when you understand it, it's still going to be hard and there will be times when you will be lazy and want to quit, but when you enjoy what you do it hurts a little less.
If you're ever confused about your direction, read Psalm 119:105 "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet." We are walkers through the city of this world, and we are often called to go out into its darkness; let us never venture there without the light-giving Word, lest we slip with our feet. Some of the hardest times are in your teenage years or early adulthood when you feel lost. It is so scary. What are you going to do? When am I going to get married? When am I going to know my purpose? When do I know what it is that I want? WHEN…? WHEN…? WHEN…? You are looking for dates when these things will happen. Psalms 107:9. “For he satisfies the longing soul…” Lay down and set aside any thing that is holding you back, any extra baggage or anything you elevate, and put God in that place. God will satisfy you.
